Passive Seismic Monitoring and Imaging

Session ID#: 279394

Session Description:
Recent advances in passive seismological methods and instrumentation enable high-resolution imaging and monitoring of the subsurface without reliance on active sources. Techniques such as ambient noise tomography, coda-wave interferometry, and surface-wave methods, combined with dense arrays and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), provide new opportunities to retrieve spatial and temporal variations in the Earth’s interior. These approaches are increasingly applied to investigate tectonic deformation, magmatic systems, cryospheric environments, and near-surface dynamics. This session invites contributions that use passive seismic observations to study a wide range of Earth processes. Topics may include, but are not limited to : (1) Passive seismic tomography using ambient seismic noise, other correlation-based approaches, and surface-wave methods; (2) Temporal variations in seismic properties associated with environmental or volcanic forcing; (3) Applications in polar and near-surface environments; (4) Emerging acquisition technologies, including DAS and rotational sensors; (5) Integration with geodetic, hydrologic, and/or geochemical observations.
