Paleomagnetic Records and Their Stratigraphic, Geodynamo, and Earth System Implications

Session Description:
The geomagnetic field is an important component of the Earth system. Paleomagnetic records offer a unique opportunity to observe past changes in the geomagnetic field, providing fundamental insights into the timing and mechanisms of the processes involved with the geodynamo. Paleomagnetic records are also useful in the stratigraphic organization of geological sequences, as frameworks for correlating archives and providing age control. These uses complement each other – understanding of the geomagnetic field is informed by stratigraphic organization of records, and better understanding of the field informs stratigraphic correlation. Paleomagnetic records can also be used to offer insights into other Earth processes, such as modulation of cosmogenic nuclide production. We invite contributions that utilize paleomagnetic archives as a tool to organize geologic records in time, describe the character of past geomagnetic events, assess changes and mechanisms of the geomagnetic field, and explore the interaction of the field with Earth systems.
