Session Description:
Instrumental records of extreme events (e.g., tropical cyclones, floods, droughts) are spatially and temporally limited, creating significant challenges in understanding natural hazards with long or non-stationary periodicities. Catastrophic events like Hurricanes Helene (2024) and Melissa (2025), flooding in West Africa (2024) and Pakistan (2025), the 2025 European heatwave, Cyclones Senyar and Ditwah (2025), and the January 2025 Southern California wildfires highlight the need to contextualize seemingly unprecedented hazards with additional observations from paleo-records. The long-term perspectives offered in these reconstructions provide critical insight into risk and aid decision-making in vulnerable communities increasingly exposed to hazards in a changing climate. We welcome submissions reconstructing extreme events during the Common Era, Holocene, or Pleistocene. We strongly encourage the submission of studies using high-resolution records, understudied regions, novel or multiproxy techniques, or proxy-model experiments to characterize hazards, understand interactions with the climate system, or inform mitigation strategies that reduce risk for vulnerable communities.
