Carbon Cycling in Global Wetlands and Peatlands

Session Description:
Wetland and peatland ecosystems play a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate due to their large soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas fluxes (including carbon dioxide and methane). Despite their importance, substantial uncertainties remain in the factors that influence wetland carbon cycling, including hydrology, natural and anthropogenic disturbances, and interactions with other biogeochemical cycles. In this session, we invite studies from a wide range of peat-forming and mineral wetlands, including sites from the high latitudes to the tropics that represent intact, degraded, and/or restored ecosystems. Studies exploring past, present, and future dynamics of wetland ecosystems are also welcome, including potential carbon-climate feedbacks, as they provide insight to how wetlands respond to climate and land use pressures. We encourage submissions that leverage a range of methods, including but not limited to: field measurements, laboratory experiments, long-term observations, remote sensing, and/or modeling.
