Intersections of Ecology, Hydrology, and Climatology in Earth’s Drylands

Session Description:
Drylands include 41% of Earth’s land surface, 60% of global agriculture, and 35% of the human population. They are also exceptionally vulnerable to global change, partly because of the interconnectedness of dryland climatology, hydrology, and ecology. Accounting for cross-scale linkages among these components of dryland functioning is crucial for predicting impacts of climate and land-use change. In this session, we highlight advances in our understanding of the connections among dryland ecology, hydrology, and climatology; identify new approaches to quantify and characterize those connections across space and time; and address dryland-specific challenges, including those related to spatial heterogeneity and pulse responses. We invite submissions examining linkages between/among any combination of dryland ecology, hydrology, and climatology, in natural or managed ecosystems. We welcome observational, experimental, modeling, or remote sensing perspectives across a wide range of scales and fields, especially those encouraged by the NASA Adaptation and Response in Drylands (ARID) field campaign.
