New Insights from Legacy Scientific Ocean Drilling Cores: Advances in Methods and Applications

Session Description:
Legacy scientific ocean drilling cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) expeditions are foundational archives for paleoceanography and paleoclimatology research, yet many have potential for further discovery when revisited with novel approaches. This session invites submissions that apply novel laboratory, geochemical, and data-driven methods to existing scientific ocean drilling core materials, leading to advances in observations, interpretations, and methodologies. We especially encourage studies targeting past warm periods that can serve as analogues for our warming future. By highlighting the continued value of legacy cores for advancing paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic research, this session aims to stimulate new directions in shore-based research and methodological development. We also encourage synthesis and coordination across institutions and disciplines to maximize the scientific value of legacy core samples, which are a limited resource.
