Advancements in Natural Hazard Prediction, Disaster Preparedness, Public Health and National Security

Session Description:
In 2025, natural disasters cost the U.S. over $100 billion. Costs from natural hazards, such as floods, droughts, tornadoes, earthquakes, tropical cyclones, wildfires, epidemics, and pandemics, have been increasing since 1980. Fatalities and injuries are also on the rise decade-over-decade for billion-dollar disasters in the U.S., and chronic illness and infectious disease outbreaks are becoming more frequent in disaster aftermath. As natural disasters become more costly and impactful, the need to mitigate these damages is apparent. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that for every $1 invested in resilience and preparedness for natural disasters, $13 is saved in disaster costs. Efforts to integrate environmental, health, and socioeconomic data into predictive intelligence for natural hazards have flourished under advancements in critical technology. In this union session, we examine the interdisciplinary progress to monitor, detect, predict, and mitigate natural hazards, with a special focus on health and security.
