Whole-Atmosphere Coupling and Multi-Scale Drivers of Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere and Space Weather Variability

Session Description:
The Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (M-I-T) system responds to both terrestrial weather from below and space weather from above through coupled, multi-scale processes. This session examines the relative roles and nonlinear interactions of atmospheric waves, including tides, planetary waves, gravity waves, and possible in situ generated global-scale waves, together with external drivers such as solar irradiance, solar wind forcing, and geomagnetic activity in shaping global variability. We especially welcome studies of disturbances linked to polar vortex variability, volcanic eruptions, tropospheric convection, and anthropogenic forcing such as rocket launches, and their impacts across the coupled system. Contributions addressing multi-step vertical coupling, cross-scale interactions, and resolved or parameterized wave dynamics are encouraged. We invite observational, theoretical, and modeling studies using satellite missions, ground-based networks, and next-generation whole-atmosphere models, including data assimilation and digital twin frameworks. Machine learning, data-driven methods, and novel diagnostics are also welcome to advance unified understanding and improve predictability.
