Ecosystem engineers—organisms that directly or indirectly modify the physical environment—are fundamental drivers of habitat structure, ecosystem function, and biogeochemical cycling across terrestrial and aquatic systems, yet remain under-integrated in predictive frameworks of landscape change. This session seeks contributions that quantify and mechanistically link organism-driven processes to landscape dynamics, from vegetation–soil feedbacks and bioturbation to reef building, wetland modification, and hydrologic alteration. We encourage submissions on how ecosystem engineering interacts with climate change and biological invasions to reshape disturbance regimes, modulate resilience, and reorganize material and energy fluxes. Submissions that leverage interdisciplinary approaches and multi-modal observations are especially welcome, including emerging tools like remote sensing, environmental DNA, and data fusion frameworks. Also welcome are use-inspired studies that advance conservation and management applications. By bringing together studies across scales and systems, this session aims to advance a more predictive, integrative understanding of the role of ecosystem engineers in a rapidly changing world.
