From Ice Melt to Ecosystems: Biogeochemical Processes in Glaciated Coastal Waters

Session Description:
Coastal waters surrounding Greenland, Antarctica, and other glaciated regions are among the most productive environments in the polar oceans, supporting rich ecosystems and contributing to regional and global biogeochemical cycles. Increasing evidence links this productivity to the melting of marine-terminating glaciers and ice sheets. Ice melt influences primary production through multiple mechanisms, including nutrient delivery to the photic zone via terrestrial runoff and subglacial discharge, and changes in ocean circulation that promote upwelling of nutrient-rich deep waters. Drifting icebergs can further enhance localized productivity through mixing and micronutrient release during melt. Despite recent advances, key questions remain about the magnitude, variability, and spatial extent of ice-ocean-biological interactions across glaciated coastal systems. This session invites observational, modeling, and interdisciplinary studies that examine links between ice melt and marine ecosystems in fjords and other glacier-influenced regions.
