Standards and Practices in Hydrology, Seismology, and Near-Surface Geophysics Field Operations: Lessons Learned, Existing Standards, and Community Priorities

Session Description:
Successful scientific field operations require an understanding of efficient instrument deployment and data collection methods. While equipment manuals can provide a starting point, they often fail to reflect the real-world complexities of diverse geoscience field frameworks, varied survey objectives, and multi-method studies. Outside of formal educational settings, there are limited opportunities for geoscientists to learn from more experienced equipment users. As a result, scientists frequently develop best practices through individual trial and error, potentially duplicating rather than benefiting from similar efforts by other field researchers.

This interdisciplinary session will promote development and sharing of instrumentation standards and practices, in support of the AGU Distributed Sensing Technical Committee’s objectives. Poster presentations will highlight examples of hydrology, seismology, and near-surface geophysics instrumentation and field operations lessons learned; recommended practices; formal standards, developed or in progress; and recommendations on priorities and knowledge sharing solutions.
