Commons ​​is a general term for a resource shared by a group of people; it is an important framework to conceptualize new challenges in scientific information and community. Open data are essential, but not sufficient, for cultivating a flourishing scientific commons—one capable of addressing today’s compounding social, technical, and environmental challenges. Open science and commons are not just about shared data, but about shared infrastructures, governance, and care.

This session explores how open infrastructures support flourishing scientific communities—advancing discovery, facilitating new connections, and supporting scientists’ well-being. We invite contributions from all AGU sections on: interoperability standards, knowledge representation, collaborative and participatory research tools, and governance frameworks. 

We aim to build community around a vision of open science that goes beyond access—to include mutual support, collective stewardship, and inclusive collaboration. By examining the infrastructures and practices that underlie knowledge production, this session contributes to a broader field-building effort around flourishing studies.
