Advancing understanding of Warming-Induced Emissions and Climate Feedbacks: From process insights to model and policy integration

Session Description:
Greenhouse gas concentrations (GHGs)—methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and nitrous oxide (N₂O)—are rising at accelerating rates. Emerging evidence indicates that earth system feedbacks are driving warming-induced emissions (WIE) from thawing permafrost, warming wetlands, forest fires, and other climate-sensitive systems. These feedbacks amplify climate change beyond current projections, yet remain poorly quantified and largely excluded from Earth system models, carbon budgets, and policy frameworks.

This session invites contributions that advance understanding of the magnitude, timing, and drivers of WIE. We welcome studies using field measurements, remote sensing, ecosystem and Earth system modeling, and AI/ML to reduce uncertainty, improve attribution, quantify impacts, and incorporate these processes into earth system feedbacks generally. Submissions aligned with coordinated community efforts, including model intercomparison and coordinated synthesis activities (e.g., WIE-MIP), are encouraged. We also invite work that advances integration of WIE into climate projections, mitigation strategies, and policy-relevant frameworks.
