Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions: From Headwaters Through River Corridors to Coastal Environments

Session Description:
The interactions between groundwater and surface water play a critical role in water availability and quality. The main challenge lies in quantifying water, solute, and heat exchanges between surface and subsurface domains, which vary greatly in time and space. The variety of hydrologic settings in which these exchanges occur - including mountains, lakes, rivers, and coasts - poses different challenges associated with GW–SW interactions. In inland systems, rivers are prone to geomorphological changes that can redistribute hyporheic exchanges. In coastal environments, salinization is the primary concern related to interactions between surface and subsurface flows. This session invites abstracts investigating groundwater-surface water interactions and their potential implications for flow, solute, and heat transport across all settings. Studies that include modeling, field measurements, geospatial analyses, and remote sensing are welcome. We welcome contributions that aim to either reconstruct past or predict future shifts in these interactions, driven by hydroclimatic and geomorphological changes.
