Economic Geology Across Scales: From Solid Earth Processes to Critical Mineral Resources

Session Description:
Energy diversification and vehicle electrification requires increased access to metallic and non-metallic resources, both traditional (e.g., Cu-Ni-Fe-Pt) and not (e.g., REE-graphite-Co-Li). Utilizing a mineral systems framework for successful exploration entails a better scientific understanding of the physio-chemical processes controlling the origin and distribution of mineral resources across all scales. This session aims to create a dynamic forum at AGU where Earth scientists within and peripheral to economic geology can share their most recent findings with implications for the genesis and evolution of mineral deposits. We welcome contributions that use mineral deposits and their geochemical footprint to inform broader geological processes, such as tectonic evolution, mantle and crustal melting, volatile cycling, metal solubility in melts and fluids, fluid–rock interaction, and surface weathering. Ultimately, this session seeks to bridge disciplinary boundaries and highlight the fundamental links between Earth processes and the formation of mineral resources needed for sustainable global development.
