Vegetation dynamics and land–atmosphere interactions

Session Description:
Land–atmosphere interactions are fundamental drivers of weather, climate, and hydroclimate variability across spatial and temporal scales. Exchanges of energy and water between the land surface and the atmosphere shape boundary-layer development, precipitation patterns, and climate extremes. Terrestrial ecosystems both mediate and respond to these exchanges: vegetation structure, phenology, productivity, biodiversity, and land management influence land–atmosphere coupling, while atmospheric variability and extremes threaten ecosystem function, resilience, and recovery. These feedbacks are especially important in water-limited ecosystems (e.g., savannas ecosystems). Improving understanding of these two-way interactions is essential for better predicting droughts, heatwaves, rainfall patterns, and other hazards, and for understanding how ecosystems respond to, recover from, and potentially amplify these stresses in a changing climate.

We invite topics include, but are not limited to: land–atmosphere interactions, hydroclimate extremes, ecosystem resilience, short- or long-term variability of soil moisture, evapotranspiration, vegetation productivity and phenology, land cover changes, and their respective changing mechanisms.
