Vegetation Shifts and Climate Interactions on Millennial to Million-year Timescales

Session Description:
Vegetation and climate are coupled through biogeophysical and biogeochemical feedbacks that operate across spatiotemporal scales, from energy and water fluxes responding over seconds to days, to reorganizations of global land cover across glacial-interglacial cycles. Vegetation shifts, driven by changing climates or human activities, in turn have strong but underexplored climatic effects through altered surface energy balances and carbon fluxes. The variety of climate states and temporal scales examined in studies of past vegetation dynamics and vegetation-atmosphere interactions enables critical insights into the processes governing mass-energy transfer between the atmosphere and the Earth's surface and projecting future climate trajectories.
This session welcomes contributions that explore climate-vegetation interactions in the past and related processes such as carbon cycling and that employ proxy or other observational datasets, modeling approaches, or their synthesis. This session is intended to provide a meeting ground for the paleovegetation proxy and modeling communities, global change scientists, and paleogeoscientists.
