Satellite Gravimetry for Terrestrial Hydrology: New Applications and Emerging Science

Session Description:
Two decades of GRACE and GRACE-FO observations have established terrestrial water storage as a fundamental observable in hydrology and climate science. This session invites contributions highlighting recent advances across satellite gravimetry research and its growing applications in hydrology, hydroclimatology, and water resources. Topics include terrestrial water storage variability, hydrologic extremes, groundwater depletion, drought-to-flood transitions, and the relative roles of climate variability, long-term change, and human water use in shaping storage dynamics.
We welcome studies that advance what can be inferred from gravimetric observations through integration with complementary datasets, including GNSS, InSAR, SWOT, altimetry, and in situ records, or through statistical inference, data assimilation, and physically informed machine learning.
Contributions that sharpen component separation, strengthen uncertainty quantification, and improve recovery of robust hydrologic signals are encouraged. The session highlights methods for linking storage changes to processes across scales. This session showcases the maturity and evolution of the GRACE and GRACE-FO legacy.
