Satellite Gravimetry: Mission Concepts, Algorithms, and New Applications

Session Description:
The first generation of dedicated satellite gravity missions, namely Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP), Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), its follow-on mission (GRACE-FO), and Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE), provided unprecedented insights into Earth's static and time-variable gravity field. The upcoming GRACE-C mission will satisfy continuity of the GRACE-series, maintaining crucial climate records, through tracking the Earth's time-variable gravity field. Other missions, such as the European Next-Generation Gravity Mission (NGGM) will further enhance the science return achieved through space gravimetry. This session focuses on satellite gravimetry of the Earth and other planetary bodies and solicits abstracts focused on a) the current status of GRACE-FO and GRACE-C missions; b) algorithms that include modern advances in data sciences and optimization techniques (e.g., machine learning); c) satellite mission concepts for gravity field retrieval; d) science applications; and e) infusion of new technology into future gravity missions and mass change measurements.
