Scientific communication is more important than ever in today’s technology-driven world to reach audiences beyond academia. Creating accessible avenues allows the general public to learn and engage with our research and boost interest in, and understanding of, scientific topics. In this session, organized by the AGU Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee (H3S), we explore “outside of the box (plot)” ways to communicate science with the general public besides publishing articles in journals. We will have presentations from geoscientists who have established original and effective ways of communicating research. We encourage all innovative and creative submissions across multiple scales, from broad and interdisciplinary initiatives to community-focused projects. For example, we welcome traditional and non-traditional art media, citizen science and community observation outreach, social media projects, and data visualization initiatives. Together, we aim to explore new and exciting ways to highlight our research, enhance public understanding, and boost interest in pressing scientific challenges.
