Integrated Organic Waste Management Strategies for Climate Mitigation, Environmental Quality, and Soil Health

Session Description:
Sustainable organic waste management may provide a variety of environmental, agricultural, and societal benefits. The reuse of organic materials may improve environmental quality while supporting public and ecological health. However, challenges to sustainable organic waste management remain, including effectively measuring and mitigating pollutants during treatment processes, managing emerging pollutants in organic waste feedstocks (e.g., microplastics), and better understanding the effects of organic amendments on soil health.
This session aims to connect and showcase research on the climate, air quality, biogeochemical, contamination, and societal aspects of sustainable organic waste management strategies. These strategies or approaches could include composting, anaerobic digestion, biological conversion, livestock and agricultural waste strategies, emerging technologies and land application of organic amendments. We welcome contributions that incorporate field measurements, modeling components, and/or lifecycle assessments, at a variety of scales (backyard, community, agricultural, commercial), and seek a geographic diversity of presentations.
