Environmental Radionuclide Tracing and Transport in a Changing Nuclear Era: Prediction, Risk, Remediation, and Biogeochemical Insights spanning Earth systems

Session Description:
Commercial nuclear energy is expanding globally, accompanied by renewed interest in fuel cycles, reprocessing, and long-term waste management. At the same time, nuclear weapon-related activities are re-emerging through modernization, renewal of production infrastructure, and increasing concern over possible nuclear escalation. Together, these developments highlight the growing need to understand the environmental fate and transport of radionuclides across Earth systems. 

This session examines radionuclides as both contaminants and environmental tracers across terrestrial to marine systems. We invite contributions on radionuclide sources, transport, retention and remobilization, hydrologic and geomorphic controls, sediment redistribution, land–ocean connectivity, predictive modeling, exposure and ecological risk, and remediation informed by process understanding. We welcome studies using radionuclides to reveal Earth surface processes, material cycling, and environmental change.

Anthropogenic radionuclides, including those from Fukushima, Chornobyl, and atmospheric testing, provide valuable opportunities to investigate transport pathways, tracer behavior, and management implications in a changing nuclear era.
