Session Description:
Environmental magnetism is used to characterize and investigate geologic, anthropologic, and biogeochemical processes and histories. Interpreting these signals requires an understanding of how magnetic minerals form, partition, transform, and are preserved, and how they interact with physical, chemical, and biological processes. This session is a celebration of the many ways magnetic minerals are used to understand the world around us. We welcome submissions that use magnetic properties to investigate environmental processes and histories, including (but not limited to) weathering, erosion, deposition, diagenesis, remanence acquisition, paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, magnetofossils, pedogenesis, and air or soil pollution. We particularly encourage multidisciplinary contributions that combine magnetic investigations of records with independent geological, geochemical, microbiological, modeling, and/or microscopic constraints. Laboratory experiments and cultures, new theoretical models, unmixing approaches, and innovative analytical techniques and computational approaches to solve key environmental magnetism issues are also welcome.
