Generative AI in Hydrology and Interdisciplinary Environmental Research: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Session Description:
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), including large language models (LLMs), is transforming hydrology and environmental sciences by enabling new approaches for analyzing complex, big-data systems. The availability of multi-source environmental data and modeling outputs provides opportunities to improve understanding of hydrological and environmental processes across scales. However, the effectiveness of GenAI depends on its ability to provide reliable, interpretable, and scientifically meaningful results under real-world conditions. The goal of this session is to provide a forum for discussing recent developments in applying GenAI to hydrology and interdisciplinary environmental challenges, including data-driven analytics, modeling, decision support systems, and hydroinformatics. We welcome contributions that advance the use of GenAI for improving scientific understanding, modeling capabilities, education, and decision-making, particularly in complex environmental systems. Contributions from early-stage researchers, students, women, and minorities are especially welcome.
