Geophysical and Oceanographic Monitoring of Changing Polar Oceans

Session Description:
As Earth's oceans warm, physical and biological conditions are changing rapidly, particularly in polar regions. Thermohaline profiles, circulation patterns, sea ice coverage, atmospheric effects, behavioral patterns of marine biota, and human activities are all changing in ways that can impact human subsistence, economic development, and security interests in these regions. For example, physical changes can affect abilities to detect and monitor anthropogenic activities and natural hazards, and changes in the populations of prey species can impact the annual movements of predators, which in turn can impact fishing and shipping operations.

  We invite contributions that illuminate physical and biological impacts of polar ocean changes. These may include empirical observations and simulations for marine soundscape, navigability, capacity for detecting and characterizing both human activity (mining, shipping, fishing, dumping, etc.), and hazards affecting communities and activities in Arctic and Antarctic waters. Modeling efforts to predict changes to important parameters are also welcome.
