Geophysics in the Oceans: Observations, Modeling, and New Frontiers

Session Description:
The ocean basins are a fundamental expression of plate tectonics, covering the majority of Earth’s surface and encompassing the entire life cycle of oceanic plates. The oceans thus offer unique opportunities to investigate the core processes and components of plate tectonics, while also posing challenges for instrumentation and analysis. Ongoing efforts to collect in situ geophysical data continue to fill observational gaps and illuminate solid Earth processes across a range of spatial and temporal scales. This session invites contributions that draw on marine geophysical observations to investigate tectonic processes and interactions across the hydrosphere, lithosphere, and/or asthenosphere. Topics could include, but are not limited to, imaging and/or geodynamical modeling of the oceanic lithosphere/asthenosphere, mantle discontinuities, mantle convection and plumes, presence/role of partial melt and volatiles, intraplate volcanism, seafloor geodesy, deformation/seismicity at plate boundaries, and new seafloor instrumentation or data analysis techniques.
