Dust in a Changing Climate: From Small‐Scale Insights to Large‐Scale Understanding

Session Description:
Interactions of the dust cycle with components of the changing Earth system produce a wide range of complex effects in the atmosphere, oceans, and on land surfaces, influencing processes such as nutrient cycling, landscape morphology, and the hydrological cycle. To better understand and assess these effects, advances are needed in field and laboratory measurements, remote sensing, and models of dust properties, and new insights are needed to improve understanding of dust–climate interactions. Additionally, a growing body of work is elucidating the links between dust and society, spanning air quality, human health, sustainability, and green energy. This session invites multidisciplinary studies of aeolian dust to advance understanding of its role in the Earth system and society. This session will honor Dr. Paul Ginoux, who recently retired from NOAA/GFDL, in recognition of his seminal contributions to this field. Contributions that build on or are inspired by his work are encouraged.
