Where There’s Smoke…There’s Science: Connecting Wildfire Across Systems, Scales, and Society

Session Description:
Wildfires are a persistent disturbance with both beneficial and detrimental effects, shaping ecosystems, influencing biogeochemical cycles, and impacting human communities. As wildfire regimes shift in frequency, severity, and spatial extent, their wide-reaching consequences increasingly demand transdisciplinary approaches to understand, predict, and mitigate impacts. This session invites contributions examining wildfire across diverse landscapes and systems, including rivers, lakes and reservoirs, soils, organisms, and the wildland-urban interface. We welcome studies spanning empirical observations, modeling, and human dimensions (e.g., economics, risk perception, water treatment). We particularly encourage integrative work that connects processes across scales, environments, disciplines, and encourage participation across sectors (academia, agencies, NGOs, Tribal organizations, and community partnerships). By bringing together varied approaches and viewpoints, we aim to foster a more integrated discussion of both scientific advances and applied needs and advance holistic understanding of wildfire dynamics in a rapidly changing environment.
