Targeting Methane Mitigation: Quantification of Anthropogenic Methane Sources at All Scales Through Atmospheric Measurements

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas, responsible for approximately 25% of total radiative forcing, and atmospheric mixing ratios continue to rise. Urgent emissions reductions are required to lower peak warming. Globally, anthropogenic methane originates from a wide range of sources such as fossil fuel production, rice cultivation, ruminants, and waste. Each sector presents unique challenges to measure and mitigate. Measurements inform emissions estimates from all sectors, while bottom-up inventories currently serve as the basis for assessing mitigation progress. This session highlights studies using measurements at all scales (from chambers to satellites) to quantify anthropogenic methane emissions, emphasizing analyses that (1) advance technology and/or methods to provide accurate and repeatable emissions measurements, (2) allow attribution of emissions to specific sources, and/or (3) upscale measurement-derived estimates into inventories and budgets to inform stakeholders on mitigation and policy pathways
