Targeting Fire Emissions for Future Implications

Session Description:
Excess and high emission wildfire events have local to global impacts, and can perpetuate fire-climate feedbacks, further increasing warming and subsequent fires, damaging public health, and decreasing long-term ecosystem resilience and the stability of carbon storage. Understanding how to anticipate, identify, and quantify high emission fire events and associated smoke transport, is critical for management before, during, and after a fire. We invite exploration of climate-driven wildfire emissions and associated management across wildland and human-dominated landscapes using remote sensing, field observations, modeling or integrated approaches, testing of technology in field campaigns, and community co-developed projects. We highlight innovative approaches targeting early-warning methods, identification of regions for measurement and mitigation, and multi-model exploration of impacts and local, regional and long-range smoke transport. We aim to identify approaches and work with potential to develop a useable, rigorous data-to-action pipeline that mitigates increasing wildfire emissions and enhances the resilience of communities and ecosystems.
