Best practice in incorporating place-based, citizen science into broader hydrological research

Session Description:
Citizen science approaches have demonstrated potential to enhance inclusivity and maximise local impact in hydrologic research, yet are often viewed as an unrelated bolt-on in larger research projects. This session examines best practice in employing such approaches to enrich hypothesis generation, hydrologic surveys and modelling, and the production of deliverables. We welcome contributions that address challenges and opportunities in the utilisation of citizen science as an element of the hydrologic toolkit; for example:
- How citizen science data uncertainty can be bracketed/quantified?
- The incorporation of qualitative local/indigenous knowledge into quantitative models
- The combination of citizen science with aspects of AI like machine learning
- How impact can be enhanced by engaging non-scientific stakeholders.
- The development of best practices when involving such stakeholders in hydrological research programmes.
Submissions should explore participatory approaches across hydrologic and/or geoscience cycles, with possible links to water resources management, geohazards, environmental sustainability, and human and ecosystem health.
