Coastal Climate Risk in a Changing Ocean: Processes, Projections, and Resilience

Session Description:
Coastal climate risk is shaped by changing ocean conditions, including sea-level rise, tropical and extratropical cyclones, storm surges, waves, compound flooding, marine heatwaves, evolving coastlines, and marine and coastal ecosystem change, including ocean acidification, with important impacts on estuaries, fisheries, coastal communities, and economies. This session invites contributions that advance understanding of the oceanic and coastal processes modulating coastal weather and climate extremes, including compound extreme events, ecosystem responses, and risk across timescales, from extreme events to long-term change. We welcome observational, remote-sensing, theoretical, and modeling studies that examine ocean–coast interactions, estuarine and shelf processes, land subsidence, sediment and morphodynamic change, biogeochemical and ecosystem responses, and high-resolution projections of future coastal hazards under changing climate conditions. Contributions that connect process understanding to coastal risk assessment, forecasting, ecosystem and fisheries resilience, and adaptation strategies, including natural and nature-based approaches, are particularly encouraged.
