Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO)

Session Description:
Forecast informed reservoir operations (FIRO) is a flexible water management approach that uses data from watershed monitoring and advancements in weather and streamflow forecasting to improve reservoir operations and inform water managers’ decision-making. FIRO applies emerging science and technology to optimize water resource management and project resilience without costly infrastructure. A key component of the FIRO program is the Research and Operations Partnership (RAOP) approach, which facilitates knowledge transfer to and from the research and water management communities. This session provides a forum to discuss:

  • Advances in weather and hydrologic modeling and forecasting approaches
  • Integration of real-time observations and data to support reservoir operations
  • Operational flexibility and adaptation strategies in reservoir management
  • Development of decision support tools
  • Approaches to support the valuation of FIRO
  • Research and operations partnerships and stakeholder engagement efforts
