NISAR and the Cryosphere: Advancing Observations of Ice Sheets, Sea Ice, Permafrost, and Seasonal Snow

Session Description:
With the launch of NISAR, we are entering a transformative period for cryosphere science. NISAR’s unique combination of L- and S-band SAR, global coverage, and frequent revisit enables unprecedented observations of dynamic cryospheric processes across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This session invites contributions that leverage NISAR data, alone or in synergy with other remote sensing, in situ, and modeling approaches, to advance understanding of key cryospheric components, including ice sheets and glaciers, sea ice, permafrost, and seasonal snow. Topics may include algorithm development, time-series analysis, data fusion, machine learning/AI applications, calibration and validation, and emerging scientific and operational use cases. We particularly encourage studies demonstrating early applications of NISAR data, preparation for NISAR-era science, and cross-disciplinary efforts that highlight the mission’s potential to improve monitoring, prediction, and decision-making in a changing cryosphere.
