Urbanization and the Environment: Data, Models, and Applications

Session Description:
Comprehensive and timely understanding of urban systems and their interactions with the environment is essential for guiding sustainable development. As urbanization accelerates, it is placing increasing pressure on ecosystems both within and surrounding cities. This session invites contributions that utilize geospatial data, field measurements, artificial intelligence, and modeling frameworks to advance interdisciplinary understanding of urbanization and its environmental impacts. We welcome studies addressing key processes such as land use and land cover change, urban ecosystem functions, wildfire and other hazards, water use and conservation, and interactions among urbanization, agriculture expansion, and hydrological processes. Research on air and water quality, biodiversity, and human/public health within urban contexts is also encouraged. Particular emphasis is placed on integrating geospatial data, remote sensing, models, and data-driven (or hybrid) approaches to assess and manage urban environmental change. This session also aims to showcase innovative, scalable applications that inform decision-making and support resilient, sustainable urban futures.
