Urban Morphology, Microclimate, and Boundary Layer effects on Atmospheric Processes and Air Quality.

Session Description:
Urban morphology is a fundamental but still underexplored control on atmospheric process dynamics and boundary-layer air quality at kilometer to sub-kilometer scales. Through Urban Enhanced Effects (UEE), the built environment modifies urban microclimates, urban heat island intensity, advection, turbulence, convection, emissions, and reaction kinetics, thereby shaping the spatial and temporal variability of air pollution. This session invites observational, modeling, and theory-based studies that place urban morphology at the center of urban atmospheric science, including analyses using Local Climate Zones, the World Urban Database, and fine-scale built-environment metrics. We welcome work using low-cost sensors, satellite and ground observations, deterministic and dispersion models, AI hybrid frameworks, and physics-informed neural networks to quantify how urban form alters air quality and exposure. Compared with broader urban environment sessions, this session emphasizes morphology-resolved process understanding and cross-scale coupling, providing a focused forum for advancing mechanistic insight, model development, and actionable solutions for healthier cities.
