Non-Perennial and Variably Inundated Ecosystems: Interdisciplinary Studies of Temporary Waterways Across Scales

Session Description:
Non-perennial and variably inundated ecosystems (e.g., intermittent/ephemeral rivers; agricultural and urban drainage systems; wetlands; floodplains; vernal ponds; hillslopes; and tidal systems) are spatially ubiquitous, temporally dynamic, and vitally important for hydrological, ecological, and biogeochemical processes. These systems serve as a nexus between environmental and socioeconomic challenges surrounding regulation and protection of waterways. This session invites interdisciplinary contributions that examine how wetting-drying dynamics influence physical, chemical, and biological processes across systems, including solute and sediment transport, biogeochemical cycling, and community dynamics. We also welcome studies exploring how perturbations such as wildfire, groundwater depletion, shifting precipitation seasonality, and land use change alter the frequency, duration, and magnitude of these dynamics from point to watershed scales. Observational, experimental, monitoring, modeling, management, and policy perspectives are encouraged.
