Advancing Flood Hazard Mapping in Data Scarce Himalayan Basins; A Geo Spatial Approaches from the Melamchi River Basin Nepal

Session Description:
This session focuses on flood hazard mapping issues in Himalayan countries such as Nepal. Floods and Landslides are common natural hazards in Nepal. The mountainous region of Nepal is highly vulnerable to floods, landslides, extreme rainfall events and flash floods, which are increasingly transforming into cascading hazards with the multiple downstream impacts. Limited availability of the reliable hydro- meterological data often constraints accurate risk zoning and effective planning. This technical session highlights approaches for the flood hazard mapping using spatial techniques, including remote sensing and GIS, along with the multi criteria decision analysis and AHP method. The session emphasizes methodological advancements for improving hazard assessment and risk mapping in data scare mountainous environments. It also aims to support better understanding of the disaster risk and strengthen scientific approaches for the resilience and risk reduction in the vulnerable Himalayan regions
