Multi-Sector Dynamics: Using AI to Model and Manage Complex Adaptive Human-Earth Systems

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are quickly changing the landscape of methods available to conceptualize and execute research. We posit that Multi-Sector Dynamics (MSD) research stands to benefit from these advances, and we are thus interested in exploring how AI can be responsibly integrated alongside domain knowledge to advance modeling and management of co-evolving human-Earth systems. We invite contributions demonstrating how AI methodologies – from differentiable modeling and causal discovery to foundation models and reinforcement learning – advance understanding and governance of these complex adaptive systems. Of particular interest is work moving toward AI-informed discovery, leveraging AI in the research process through agent-based workflows that iteratively generate hypotheses, design analyses, while uncovering structural and network dynamics. We welcome contributions spanning the full spectrum of MSD research, from data acquisition and model development to uncertainty quantification of nonlinear interconnected systems, across water, energy, land, food and cross-sector nexus domains.
