Multi-Hazard Flood Modeling: From Inland to Coast

Session Description:
Coastal watersheds are among the most populated regions worldwide, containing industries, transportation facilities, ports, tourism-driven economies, and dense urban developments. These regions are susceptible to natural hazards, such as extreme rainfall events, tropical cyclones, and storm surges, which are exacerbated by climate change and the compounding effects of multi-hazards. Current practices have started implementing multi-hazard modeling techniques for inundation and risk assessments. However, there are discrepancies regarding best practices when characterizing compound floods and the use of multi-hazard models from the federal, local, private, and academic sectors. This session will present state-of-the-art compound flood models that couple hydrologic and coastal processes. New modeling techniques and applications will be discussed that improve our ability to capture the complex interactions that characterize multiple flood hazards. This session should interest engineers and scientists within the coastal and hydrologic discipline, community planners, and floodplain managers.
