Advances and Applications of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing for Security, Exploration, and Anthropogenic Systems Monitoring

Session Description:
Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing (DFOS) is a rapidly evolving field enabling dense, long-range, and cost-effective observations relevant to global security, resource exploration, and anthropogenic activity. This session highlights applications of Distributed Acoustic (DAS), Temperature (DTS), and Strain (DSS) sensing, as well as emerging DFOS modalities, for seismic monitoring across broad spatial scales. We invite contributions on detection and characterization of signals from earthquakes, explosions, induced seismicity, infrastructure, and other anthropogenic activity, as well as subsurface characterization and time-lapse imaging in support of monitoring for hydrocarbon systems, geothermal energy, carbon sequestration, and mineral exploration. We welcome studies addressing challenges in DFOS data and applications, including signal detection, phase identification, event location, magnitude estimation, classification, array deployment, estimating changes in subsurface properties, large-scale data processing, validation with external datasets, and real-time or operational workflows. Contributions on emerging DFOS technologies and applied monitoring systems are also encouraged.
