Advances in Soil Carbon Sequestration: Processes, Management, and Scalable Storage

Session Description:
Soils show promising potential for carbon sequestration, with the capacity to store carbon in both organic (SOC) and inorganic (SIC) forms over extended timescales. Approaches including biochar addition, cover cropping, grazing management, and enhanced weathering seek to promote these storage pathways, yet their effectiveness depends on coupled biogeochemical processes that are incompletely understood. 

This session invites contributions addressing, but not limited to: (1) mechanistic controls on SOC and SIC formation and stabilization, (2) responses of soil carbon to land management and environmental variability, (3) integrated microbial, mineral, and hydrological processes in soil carbon sequestration, (4) novel modeling, data assimilation, and benchmarking approaches; and (5) scalable strategies for enhancing and verifying soil carbon sequestration.

We highlight recent advances from field experiments, process- and machine learning/AI-based modeling, and data-driven methods. Through cross-disciplinary dialogue, this session seeks to identify pathways toward predictive, scalable, and practically implementable soil carbon management strategies across diverse ecosystems.
