Compounding Burdens: Approaches to the Environmental and Equity Impacts of Data Centers

Session Description:
The rapid expansion of data centers creates infrastructure challenges where energy, water, emissions, and community impacts compound. Electricity demand outpacing renewable deployment increases fossil fuel reliance, while facilities in water-stressed regions worsen drought risk. Noise, air pollution, and resource competition fall heaviest on communities facing environmental injustice. This session welcomes work examining data center footprints through focused case studies or systems analyses. Contributions may include modeling water-energy-emissions tradeoffs, hydrological and ecological impacts, spatial analysis of siting and cumulative burdens, and environmental justice dimensions. We also encourage research on technical, regulatory, and policy pathways toward equitable outcomes. By bringing together hydrology, ecology, engineering, and policy experts, we aim to inform science and governance at this pivotal moment. This cross-disciplinary approach is essential for addressing the multi-dimensional challenges posed by the rapid growth of digital infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable, just transition for affected communities and ecosystems globally.
