The Cryosphere Is for All: Overcoming Barriers to Participation in the Cryospheric Sciences

Session Description:
Research on the cryosphere has a long history of ostracizing promising scientists and knowledgeable stakeholders. The cryosphere is undergoing an “all hands on deck” crisis due to long-term changes in average weather patterns; however, many people are unable to contribute to efforts to understand or adapt to this crisis. Expanding the scope of research and ensuring participation requires appropriate engagement across the full spectrum of the cryosphere workforce and beneficiaries. This recurring session consists of talks, poster presentations, and a panel discussion by invited experts, moderated by Mckenzie Skiles, President of the Cryosphere Section. The session focuses on barriers to participation, and recent efforts (including successes and failures) to attract the broadest range of voices into the discipline. We welcome submissions from individuals at all career stages working on new ideas to advance participation, with attention to best practices for fieldwork, open science, collaboration, awards, and engagement with Indigenous communities.
