The Arctic and its Gateways: Unlocking the climatic impact of North Pacific-Arctic-North Atlantic interchanges

Session Description:
The Arctic region disproportionally impacts global climate through its contributions to planetary albedo, ocean circulation, and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. Understanding the role of the Arctic’s shallow seas, land-ocean-ice interactions, and ocean gateways in shaping both short and long-term climate evolution requires new insights from geologic archives, including marine sediment cores, ice cores, and land-based studies. This session invites contributions that advance understanding across the North Pacific-Arctic-North Atlantic systems and their climatic impacts on timescales ranging from centuries to millions of years. We welcome studies utilizing methodological advances, model-data comparisons, and regional and pan-Arctic syntheses. Contributions drawing on recent field campaigns, including International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) expeditions to the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere, are especially encouraged.
