Human Health Effects from Ambient and Indoor Particulate Matter Pollution

Session Description:
The current standards for particulate matter (PM) are based on mass. However, recent studies indicate that bulk PM mass is not the best surrogate of health effects. Additionally, indoor PM is not regulated and the toxicity of PM originating from indoor emission sources is largely unknown. New instruments, methodologies and modeling framework including those based on advanced data analytics such as machine-learning have been developed to assess health-related properties of PM. However, the studies exploring these linkages are sparse and scattered across multiple disciplines. In this interdisciplinary GEOHEALTH session, we invite the researchers working in atmospheric and indoor measurement technology development, atmospheric sciences and modeling, advanced data analytics, aerosol toxicology and environmental epidemiologists to contribute to the discussion on what, why and how to measure the most biologically relevant parameters of PM to better address the health impacts of emissions of toxic air pollutants in indoor and outdoor environments.
