The Miocene Climate: From Poles to Tropics and Land to Sea

Session Description:
Miocene climate archives represent an opportunity to gain insight into processes that are influenced by warmer than modern climate conditions and can provide plausible analogs for future warming. During the Miocene the Earth system experienced dynamic changes with continents' positions resembled those of present-day but CO2, topography, sea level, and ice sheets varied, and flora and fauna evolved into taxa that exist today. Our understanding of processes driving these changes are continuously being developed. This session explores the processes, forcings, and feedbacks operating within the climate system throughout the Miocene, including the Oligocene-Miocene and Miocene-Pliocene transitions.

We seek submissions across a broad range of topics, including but not limited to marine and terrestrial climate records, carbon cycle dynamics, cryosphere dynamics, atmosphere and ocean circulation, evolution of biota and ecosystems, and changes in paleogeography and topography. We welcome contributions based on proxy records, numerical models, proxy-model comparisons, or other innovative approaches.
