MultiSector Dynamics: Advances in Modeling Adaptive Human Systems Response to Change

Session Description:
The representation of adaptive human action in MultiSector Dynamics (MSD) models, which include human-Earth system models spanning multiple sectors, has traditionally been missing or simplistic. For example, many MSD models lack realistic institutional dynamics or characterize human resource demands as fixed or uniform. This shortcoming warrants attention as human action is arguably the paramount determinant of MSD systems’ vulnerability and resilience. The session seeks to highlight improved representations of adaptive human action in MSD modeling, ranging from that of individual actors to wide-scale societal transformations. These improvements may relate to novel data sources, empirical techniques, or modeling approaches. We broadly invite submissions across disciplines (e.g., earth systems modeling, behavioral psychology, etc.), methodological modeling approaches (e.g., agent-based, economic, optimization, AI/ML/generative, etc.) and domains (agriculture, water, energy, transport, etc.), illustrating the diversity of approaches that can be applied to MSD research on coupled human-natural system dynamics.
