Session Description:
The Tropical North Atlantic is a focal point of intense atmospheric and oceanographic research due to connections between the sea surface, the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer, and the free troposphere. A series of exceptional events, including positive sea surface temperature anomalies, unusual tropical activity, significant dust and smoke transport from Africa, and Sargassum blooms coincided with field missions such as MAGPIE, ORCESTRA, and SASCWATCH, to name a few. This session invites contributions from modeling, field, laboratory, and satellite studies, especially those of an interdisciplinary nature, to further explore these phenomena. Example topics include
- Coupled ocean-atmosphere modes of variability and their relationship to tropical meteorology.
- Air-sea interactions from the free troposphere through marine boundary layer.
- Cloud and aerosol interactions in meteorological and biogeochemical systems.
- Dust and sea salt impacts on reactive halogens and methane.
- Sargassum blooms and microplastics that affect the Caribbean.
