Extreme Coastal Hazards, Cascading Infrastructure Risks, and Community Impacts

Session Description:
Extreme coastal hazards, including tropical cyclones and extra-tropical storms, generate compounding impacts through storm surge, wave action, and intense precipitation. These events often trigger cascading failures within critical infrastructure, leading not only to loss of infrastructure services but potentially to consequences ranging from environmental impacts to public health effects. As climate change increases the complexity of these hazards, integrated approaches are required to assess risk across human, environmental, and built systems. This session invites contributions using integrated research frameworks, including but not limited to, remote sensing, climate projections, hydrodynamic and flood modeling, and infrastructure fragility and resilience analysis. We encourage studies that bridge the gap between physical hazards and socio-environmental consequences, such as spill exposure modeling, health impact assessments, and community-engaged research. By highlighting work that improves risk communication and informs adaptation, this session aims to strengthen resilience planning for all vulnerable coastal regions.
